Carmarthenshire brothers Gethin and Aled Williams are pulling on their trainers and running a marathon to raise money for the children’s ward at Glangwili Hospital.

Administration assistant Gethin, 40, of Tycroes and council technical officer Aled of St Clears are in training for the ABP Newport Wales Marathon, which takes place on 24th October.

Aled, 38, said: “We hope to raise as much money as we can for Cilgerran Ward and have set ourselves a target of £700.

“My daughter Lili was in the children’s ward for a couple of nights back in 2019 and also Geth’s daughter Nia has experienced their care, so we both thought it was fitting to raise money for the ward.

“Now, almost two years later and with COVID-19, it feels even more fitting that we are able to play our very small part in saying thank you for everything the ward staff do to help so many children and families.”

Aled, who has done several marathons before, added: “I had been struggling with a slight hip injury over the summer but that has eased in recent weeks and is holding up well as I increase the mileage.”

Gethin said: “I have previously run the London and Snowdonia marathons. Training is going well so far.”

Nicola Llewelyn, Head of Hywel Dda Health Charities, the official charity of Hywel Dda University Health Board, said they wanted to thank Gethin and Aled for their fundraising.

““The support of our local communities enables us to provide services over and above what the NHS can provide in the three counties of Hywel Dda and we are extremely grateful for every donation we receive,” said Nicola.
