REVEALED: People in the South East are most likely to splash the cash on Black Friday

People living in the South East of England are the most tech-obsessed in the country, new research has revealed.
In the build-up to Black Friday, the study by technology experts Trusted Reviews analysed ONS data for household spending on a variety of tech products and services such as TVs, computers, and internet subscriptions, and found that the South East spends the most on technology each year.
The region’s average household spends £2,043.60 a year on technology, coming to £817.44 a year per person – the largest amount in the country, and the only area to spend more than £2,000 per household.
The South East topped the list with the highest average spend in multiple categories – it has the largest annual outlay on audio equipment, TV subscription services, and combined telecom services.
The total expenditure per household in the South East is £36,327.20, resulting in 5.63% of the average annual budget going towards technology.

The East of England was second on the list with the average household spending £1,944.80 on technology over 12 months, which calculates to £810.33 per person. This means that the average household spends 6.15% of its total expenditure spending a year. The region is the biggest spender on household appliances, with an annual budget of £270.40.
London households spend an average of £1,804.40 a year on technology – the third highest amount in the UK – which equates to £668.30 a year per person. The average household in the capital spends £36,327.20 a year, so 4.94% of the annual budget is going towards tech purchases – the lowest percentage of any of the regions. The capital has the highest expenditure on internet and telephone subscription fees.
Wales ranks fourth in the UK for total tech spend, with the average household laying out £1,768 a year on technology, equating to £768.70 spent per person. The average annual expenditure of a Welsh household is £26,676, which means that in percentage terms, people in Wales allocate the largest amount of their budget to technology – 6.63%.
Scotland comes in at fifth place, where £1,762.80 was spent on technology per household, resulting in the average yearly spend per person being £801.27. The region had a total expenditure of £26,644.80, resulting in 6.62% being spent on technology.
At the other end of the scale, Northern Ireland spends the smallest amount on tech with the average household spending £1,586 a year on technology, equating to £660.83 per person. Northern Ireland also spends the least overall of any region in the UK each year, at £25,292.80, which equates to 6.27% of the total spending on technology.
Households in the North East have the second smallest annual tech spend, at an average of £1,638, or £744.55 per person. This adds up to a total of 6.31% of the annual expenditure in the region, which is £25,9963.60 over the year.
The average West Midlands household spends £1,695.20 annually on technology – equivalent to £706.33 per person, and 6.21% of the average yearly budget, which stands at £27,310.40.
Commenting on the study, a spokesperson for Trusted Reviews said: “Black Friday is just around the corner and as people all over the country search for bargains it’s interesting to see the variations across each region when it comes to technology spending. The data shows that people living in the South East are the nation’s biggest spenders when it comes to technology and gadgets, but it’s likely everyone will be ramping up their spending as we approach Christmas.”
The average UK household expended £1,794 on technology over the year, equating to the average person spending £747.50 a year.
The average UK household costs were £30,340.40 over the year, meaning the average household spent 5.9% of their total spending on technology.
