Facebook is on a hiring spree in Europe. The giant tech company has a social network of circa 3 billion active users. Facebook CEO recently announced that it is adding new jobs in Europe. The social media giant plans to hire 10,000 people in the region over the next year to work on its platform and develop its next social app generation. Just like NetBet, giant companies are always trying their luck in technologies with innovations.
Facebook is developing its metaverse, an online universe where people can engage with their real-life friends and with characters, objects, and places from stories and movies all through virtual reality. The social networking company now wants to hire thousands of people in Europe to create the digital hub where the metaverse will live – it will include Facebook features like status updates and #hashtags.
Zuckerberg envisions a metaverse that encompasses all of reality. Users don’t use computers in the metaverse, but Facebook builds the software backbone: a virtual-reality operating system and a global ledger.
What is Metaverse?
Facebook said in a recent blog post that the metaverse innovation could help unlock access to new creative, social, and economic opportunities for users. Metaverse is a public tech innovation that provides decentralised virtual reality services based on digital assets, digital identity and value online links in order to build an open ecosystem in which social communication and value transactions are efficient, convenient and quick.
The vision behind the innovation is to expand the technology by establishing connections with the real world’s application scenarios. The technology aims to help different industries realise the value of communication – providing the most convenient method for people to understand, experience, and utilise digital assets.
With the rise of smartphones, over 4 billion people are constantly connected. Facebook is constantly innovating to build new experiences that bring people closer together in the physical world.
“We’re constantly inventing new ways to enjoy your favourite activities virtually in your favourite places in the metaverse, and as a result, you can spend time however you want, with whoever and whenever you want.” Said Mark Zuckerberg.
Various authorities have recently asked the social media company to clarify its working practices and consider whether it needs a body dedicated to scrutinising its policies and decisions. The move comes at a time when scandals amidst regulations to curb the influence of the tech company are on the rise. While the initiative may spark fears of Silicon Valley encroaching on Europe, it might be too little too late for Ireland to make a significant dent in its 6.4% unemployment rate (which compares with 5.6% in the neighbouring UK).
Despite its history of buying up rivals, Facebook is not interested in creating a Facebook-only metaverse. Zuckerberg hinted that on matters Metaverse, they are open for collaborations.
All along, Google has been a major player in the virtual world space for a while now with its immersive app Ingress and its high-profile augmented reality platforms. Since its creation, Facebook has grown into one of the most dynamic and powerful companies globally. But behind this is a long list of problems. Many users are starting to rethink their relationship with the company, so now Mark Zuckerberg has decided to take action by the Metaverse move on Europe.
Critics argue that the move is designed to divert attention from the recent scandals facing Facebook. One of Facebook’s troubles is Frances Haugen. She is a research scientist who once worked for Facebook but later outed herself as the whistleblower. Ms Haugen says that when she was working at Facebook, she discovered that Instagram had changed some of its algorithms in ways that were detrimental.
All in all, the Facebook-metaverse project is to bring social networks online in real-time. Facebook chose the move to Europe for specified reasons. In a few months, Facebook users will enjoy more synchronisation with their peers. No more waiting for your friends’ profiles to refresh when playing a game or shopping; you can be entertained in conjunction with thousands of available jobs.
