STRAWBERRIES, APPLES AND POTATOES HAVE TOPPED A LIST OF THE NATION’S BEST LOVED FRUIT AND VEG…BUT THE MOST HATED IS THE AUBERGINE, ACCORDING TO A NEW STUDY
A new study by innocent drinks reveals the most liked and disliked fruit and veg, with the humble strawberry dubbed the favourite fruit with 63 per cent.
And the old saying ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’ still resonates, with 60 percent voting the apple as second favourite.
The staple potato came in a solid third with 59 per cent of the vote, followed by bananas (58 percent), grapes (55 per cent), onions (53 per cent) and the traditional British carrot which came seventh.
Making up the top ten were broccoli (52 per cent), peas (51 per cent) and tomatoes (50 per cent).
But, when it comes to the veg the nation cannot stand, the aubergine was voted least favourite with 24 per cent.
Other fruit and veg to fall foul of British taste buds were the grapefruit (23 per cent), the avocado (22 per cent), gooseberries (21 per cent), pumpkin (20 per cent) and the controversial Brussel sprout with 20 percent.
Marrows (19 per cent), celery (18 per cent), butternut squash (17 per cent) and rhubarb (17 per cent) rounded out the top ten most hated.
And, 71 per cent of us still have a fruit bowl in our homes, filled with more traditional sorts like apples, bananas and oranges.
According to the data, a whopping 90 per cent of us feel healthier when we’ve had our five a day, yet almost a quarter of us (22 per cent) confess a large proportion of the fruit and veg we buy ends up going off and in the bin.
In fact, only 18 percent of the 1,500 adults polled claim they never throw away fruit and veg.
And for 23 per cent of us, finding wilted and inedible fruit and vegetables at the back of the fridge which we’ve forgotten about is a regular occurrence.
The poll revealed that almost a fifth of us (18 per cent) say we have no idea how to use up fruit and veg that’s past its best.
Commenting on the findings, innocent drinks’ UK Marketing Manager, Jad Marie, says, “We believe that the importance of fruit and veg as part of a balanced diet is not something that can be overlooked.
“Our aim is to help people get all the nutritional goodness they need into their diet on a day-to-day basis. With the nation’s favourite fruit packed into each bottle, our drinks are the tastiest way to help people get their five-a-day.”
The study found that, overall, 91 per cent of us claim we love the taste of fruit and vegetables.
When it comes to what we do with leftover fruit and veg, 30 per cent like to use it to make a hearty soup, 29 per cent will turn their hand to a stir fry, 24 per cent will make a fruit crumble, and 22 per cent will whizz it up into a healthy smoothie.
