New renewables innovation to produce 6 terawatts of zero-carbon electricity over 24 hours, 7 days a week, 365 days a year

In an effort to combat climate change and phase out fossil fuels for good, green entrepreneur and investor Stuart Murphy officially launches the TPGen24 project, a new type of turbine-loaded, tidal lagoon system with the ability to produce base load electricity 24/7, 365 days a year.

Current testing and calculation indicate just one three-lagoon, 15 x 7.5km TPGen24 plant has the potential to generate 6 terawatts of electricity a year, enough to power 2 million homes or recharge 20 million electric cars annually.

Research and development continues at pace, with the aim of bringing TPGen24 plants online off the coast of the UK by 2030.

Inspired by Intermittency

Frustrated by the lack of impetus, and ability, by successive governments to develop a robust, scalable renewables strategy, successful businessman and renewables entrepreneur, Stuart Murphy, has decided to seize the opportunity to effect change in the green energy sector.

Over the last five years, he has invested in extensive research to understand the intermittency issues which currently hinder most renewable resources, particularly wind and solar, and develop a system which can generate base load electricity consistently, 24/7, 365 days a year.

Harnessing the accepted knowledge that the fluctuation of sea and ocean tides are a constant, Stuart and his team quickly realised that, by deploying the correct system, this natural phenomenon could be manipulated to produce clean energy perpetually.

This ambitious vision has culminated in TPGen24, a first-of-its-kind tidal lagoon system capable of delivering Stuart’s objective of perpetual clean energy generation.

How TPGen24 works

TPGen24 differs from other tidal generators, possessing a unique system to maximise efficiency.

Essentially, it is an advanced, multi-dam facility which, because it is reliant on the ebb and flow of the tides, can operate day-in-day-out all year round. Unlike wind, solar and nuclear solutions, it is predictable, perpetual and sustainable.

The core of a TPGen24 plant comprises three central, tiered lagoons. Each one is separated by a dam, loaded with 8,000 vertically stacked turbine units, bookended by smart-controlled sluice gates. Water passes through the turbines, turning the blades as the tide rises and falls, generating energy.

However, what sets TPGen24 apart from other tidal systems is the ability to control the timing of the water flow. Using the smart-controlled sluice gate network, water can be stored within the lagoons regardless of tidal patterns, and released on demand.

This offers essential flexibility and round-the-clock provision other renewable systems cannot.

Extensive CFD testing of the core TPGen24 system, conducted between November 2019 and October 2020 calculated a single plant is able to produce an average of 6 TWh over a 12 month period. It’s a ‘game-changer’ for the entire planet, representing huge potential to provide low-carbon baseload electricity, as the UK looks to achieve Net Zero by 2050.

Huge Potential

Commenting on the potential for TPGen24, nationally and globally, inventor Stuart Murphy says, “Tidal energy is the British Isles’ greatest untapped, and undervalued, renewable resource. I think that’s crazy when you consider there’s more than enough energy in our coastal waters to satisfy the electricity needs of both Great Britain and Ireland! If we’re ever going to meet our 2050 targets, we need to give projects like TPGen24 serious consideration now, before it’s too late.

“It has taken many years of careful research and investment, but we have finally come up with a scalable way to harness the huge untapped potential of tidal energy in a consistent and low, long-term impact way. Unlike other renewables, TPGen24 depends on one of the most reliable sources existing: tidal cycles. We hope that investors, businesses and policy makers alike wake up to the potential of tidal power generation, now that a feasible, uncomplicated and deliverable solution exists.”
