December 1st, 2021: A group of local like-minded people in Carmarthenshire have joined forces to launch a cancer support community group, which is awaiting charitable status, called angor. The soon-to-be charity has been founded to provide support to those who have been diagnosed with cancer or a life-limiting illness, giving them a helping hand, an ‘anchor’, from the point of diagnosis.

Made up of a team of clinicians and service-users, the community group has over 30 years of experience in this field.

Deris Williams, a trustee, says: ‘The concept for angor started over 15 years ago when we noticed that there was a clear need for an updated wellness approach to ongoing care. Current models of cancer care follow-up cannot hope to meet all needs, and this is where angor is aiming to help fill this void’

Supported by Nigel Owens, Welsh former international rugby union referee, angor will be located in a drop-in centre with open access to the public within the Pentreawel site, opening in 2023. It will provide free, confidential, practical, and emotional support for patients affected by cancer or a life-limiting illness, with support and advice for their families.

Nigel Owens MBE, says: ‘angor has a special place in my heart because it’s a pioneering service for patients and families.’

Ahead of the official opening of the drop-in centre, resources and support will be available through the angor website, along with support pop-ups being established throughout 2022 around Carmarthenshire. Initial services planned include sign-posting, support groups, and therapies.

For more information and further links to resources, visit angor’s website at angor.org.uk, or on Facebook angor.org. Anyone interested in volunteering please register your interest on the website.
