As part of Nia Griffith MP and Lee Waters MS’ annual competition to design their Christmas card, infants and juniors from across the Llanelli constituency took out their pencils and glitter to create some fantastic, unique designs.

With hundreds of entries received from eleven different schools, choosing a winner for the both the infant and junior category was a very difficult task. Selected for the job, in recognition of their essential work during the COVID pandemic, were Christine Davies (Senior Occupational Health Advisor at Tata Steel), Juliet Thomas-Davies (Post Mistress at Ann Street Post Office) and Shannon Jenkins (Healthcare Support Worker at Prince Phillip Hospital).

The judges were presented with a wide selection of colourful and bold card designs. After careful consideration, they chose the designs that they thought would make the best Christmas cards.

Selected as the winner of the infant category was Oscar Stevenson from Ysgol y Castell, who created a cheerful Santa Claus made from his own handprints. From Ysgol Pen Rhos, Grace Woods was chosen as the winner of the junior category, with her design capturing a carefully drawn scene of Christmas in Llanelli.

The two winners will have their designs featured on the MP’s and MS’s Christmas cards, along with several runner-up entries, and framed copies will be given to the winning pupils and their schools. The schools will also receive a £100 prize courtesy of George Parker MBE, who has kindly sponsored the competition.

Nia Griffith MP said:

“We had a record number of entries this year and have seen some brilliant designs from each and every school. As there was no set theme this year, it was wonderful to see the children’s different

interpretations of Christmas and what it means to them.”

“Lee and I wish a huge congratulations to Grace and Oscar for being chosen as the winners. We think their designs will make beautiful cards.”

“We are ever so grateful to the judges for finding the time to come and judge the entries. It was a very difficult job! Also, George Parker MBE has been kind enough to sponsor the competition again this year and we appreciate his support very much.”

Lee Waters MS added:

“We’ve seen some brilliant designs again this year! I just want to say thank you to all the schools that entered the competition and showcased the talents of the children across the constituency.”

“The judges’ fantastic efforts are very much appreciated as they had a difficult job of choosing a winner. Nia and I are very grateful to them for taking time out of their busy schedules.”

“The winners as well as a selection of cards that the judges thought were the very best will be displayed in Llanelly House from Saturday 4th December through until Christmas, for all to see.”

The annual MP/MS Christmas card competition was open to all primary schools in the Llanelli constituency. Nia and Lee received several hundred entries from local school children.
