The worst cocktail for your teeth in terms of sugar content is the Mudslide. A creamy coffee-flavoured beverage, this has a whopping 22 grams of sugar which amounts to over 5 teaspoons, with more sugar than a Pop-Tart! This is almost 3/4 of your recommended daily intake so it’s advised not to have more than one of these a day.
Second, on the list is a grapefruit gin sour mocktail with over 17 grams of sugar in just one serving! Amounting to over 4 teaspoons of sugar which is 60% of your daily intake, it should be drunk in moderation.
Ranking in third place is the classic Snowball otherwise known as ‘Dutch Eggnog’. This festive favourite has over 16 grams of sugar in one serving, which is 4 teaspoons of sugar and more than 50% of your daily intake, potentially causing havoc on your teeth if drunk too frequently!
Mulled Wine, a go-to favourite, ranks 6th on the list with over 13 grams of sugar (4 teaspoons) in one serving, equating to almost half of your daily intake! The traditional Eggnog is 9th with over 3 teaspoons of sugar in one glass.
On the other end of the scale, the cocktail that is potentially kindest to your teeth is the Christmas Pudding Vodka! This is a liquid variation of the traditional dessert with only 3 grams of sugar (less than one teaspoon) in one serving, it’s just 10% of your daily suggested sugar intake, meaning in theory a couple more wouldn’t hurt you.
Craig Anderson, a spokesperson from Express Dentist says:
“At Christmas, we often feel inclined to indulge in sugary treats and alcoholic beverages, and it is fine to treat yourself, but we recommend you do it in moderation! The more sugar you consume daily, the more it can affect your teeth’s enamel, resulting in more visits to your dentist. Be kind to your teeth!”
