Cerebra, the national charity based in Carmarthen that supports children with brain conditions and their families, turns 20 years old on 7th December. And to help celebrate, they’ve been counting down some of their achievements and milestones in the build-up to the big day.

The charity was established to be a leading light in the world of research into all things to do with neurological conditions in children. The aspiration was to use the intellectual capacity of the greatest academics, thinkers and researchers to understand more about all children, but especially those who were so wonderfully and positively different.

However, Cerebra CEO, Chris Jones explains that the charity wanted to do more than research and understand. “We wanted to empower families by finding novel and innovative ways to share what we learned and understood so that those families with whom we did share would be empowered.”

Through a network of universities, Cerebra supports research into; pregnancy, mental health, sleep, legal entitlements, family research and creative design. They then share this knowledge by providing children and families with high quality information and one-on-one support.

Cerebra started their birthday celebrations early in order to look back on how they have helped some wonderful children and their families over the years. From collaborating on reports to ensure Local Authorities are treating families fairly and providing them with access to the public services they need, to building innovative toys and equipment for children to be able to take part in the activities they love, there’s been lots to celebrate.

They’ve also made a video to mark the occasion and to say thank you for all the support they’ve received over the years and this will be available to see on their birthday.

Although it’s been a time of reflection, Cerebra continues to be driven to look forward. Chris Jones adds; “Cerebra is still on a journey and like all of us, still has lots to learn and lots to offer. In many ways, at 20 years old, perhaps the best is yet to come.

One thing is for sure. I look forward to continuing that journey, continuing to grow, to learn, to develop and to share. As I look back at 20 years of Cerebra I also look forward to the next 20 years.”
