How to change a uPVC door lock
In this section, you’ll learn how to change a uPVC door lock but before I go into details on how to do that, there are a few things you’ll have to have in place before you’ll be able to successfully change your door lock.
Requirements:
- A replacement lock (you can buy your uPVC door locks at multipointlocks.co.uk)
- A measuring tape
- A screwdriver
A lot of uPVC door locks come with a single euro-cylinder lock and a multipoint lock or a strip lock. The euro-locks have a peardrop shape. Since most uPVC door locks have a euro cylinder, in this guide, you’ll be learning how to change uPVC door locks with euro cylinders.
Procedure:
- Before purchasing a replacement lock, measure your old lock. To do that, open the door and unscrew the bolt on the side of the door. It’s the large screw that’s on the same line as the cylinder.
- Ensure that the lock is as close to flush with the door as possible – a few millimetres of protrusion is okay. If the protrusion is too large, it looks ugly and it also poses a security risk.
- After removing the screw, insert the key into the lock and turn it slightly till the cylinder releases. The process does take a little wiggling before you’ll be able to get the right spot. When the cylinder finally gives in, pulling the lock out becomes easy and it won’t pose any resistance.
- Insert the replacement lock into the hole and carefully inspect it. Ensure that the lock fits properly. If it sticks out too much then it’s the wrong size, in that case, you’ll have to purchase a lock that’s close to the dimensions of your door as possible.
- Finally, line up the replacement lock and replace the bolt. You can easily line up the lock by inserting the key into the barrel before pushing the lock in place. Once you have achieved that, turn the key to make the bolt protrude halfway, that action will force the lock into the right place making it fairly easy for the screw and the hole to line up. If you did this correctly, then you are sure that the lock will be perfectly aligned and your lock will be ready to use.
