It’s been a busy year of shopping for Brits[1], and Google Trends data shows that ‘2021 interior design trend’ searches have increased by 300% over the last 12 months[2]. This trend is likely to stay for the foreseeable future, as research also shows that 75% of Brits are already planning home improvements for next year[3].

Product interests have very much coincided with the seasons for VonHaus, as they found continued interest in garden furniture and picnic items throughout the warmer months, whereas heaters are now one of their more popular products now that the colder temperatures have rolled in.

But which products have defined 2021? VonHaus has revealed the top, most iconic interior products that Brit’s have searched for throughout the year[4].

Whether it was for productivity or entertainment purposes, the consumer trends showed that Brit’s across the UK did their very best to make sure there was never a dull moment in the home over lockdown and beyond.

Unusual Kitchen Items

Looking at the research, it seems consumers have rediscovered their love for cooking over the last year and cooking gadgets were a firm favourite over the last 12 months when evaluating the UK’s online searches.

Keywordtool.io shows searches for items including ‘popcorn maker’ increased by 586%, whilst ‘sandwich toast maker’ was up by 150% and ‘waffle maker’ saw an 120% increase in search across 2021. It’s clear that Brit’s are partial to items which treat their sweet tooth, or gadgets which are perfect for easy-to-make snacks.

Seasonal Products

Seasonal products were also popular amongst Brit’s and considering the Coronavirus restrictions being lifted in early Spring, people were quick to make the most of the warmer temperatures and better weather, and picnic blanket trends soared. Keyword search data for ‘picnic table bench’ increased by 51% in 2021 compared to last year, whilst ‘picnic glasses’ and ‘picnic table cover’ grew by 50%.

The summer months highlighted more must-have items in Brit’s outdoor spaces and the barbecue season brought out some of the largest increases in keyword data searches. ‘Outdoor furniture stores’ saw a whopping increase of 1275%, alongside ‘outdoor furniture covers’ searches which increased by 38%, closely followed by ‘wooden outdoor furniture’ which rose by 22%.

As the colder temperatures have returned, practical items have been at the fore of Brit’s shopping lists. Heaters are a must-have item and VonHaus find such gadgets are at the top of many Britons shopping lists. With the energy crisis at the fore of people’s minds, mixed in with the surprise snowfalls which happened in the early months of the year – electronic fans and heaters are a smart alternative to keeping heating costs down in the home.

Of course, Brit’s want their homes feeling cosy whilst maximising upon style, which is why keyword search data found ‘outside firepit’ searches soaring by 150% and ‘firepit garden furniture’ increasing by 46% since January 2021.

Emily Caloe, Senior Buyer for Home and Gardens at VonHaus, says: “The numerous lockdowns definitely intensified the demand for certain products. We’ve seen spikes in trends throughout the year, ranging from the spring lockdown must-haves including picnic blankets or garden products to the interior and hobby-focused products such as kitchen gadgets and heating products.

Because Brit’s have had more time on their hands due to the lockdowns, it’s given them the opportunity to make such improvements to the home which they wouldn’t usually have time for otherwise. It’s great to see that people are experimenting with a range of different products throughout their homes, from popcorn makers to firepits!”
