Revealed: The UK’s most bankable male film stars

New research has found that Benedict Wong is the UK’s most bankable male film star, with his films making an average of £267 million at the box office.
Research by PokerListings.com studied box office website The-Numbers to find out that for each film in which Benedict Wong has played a leading role, the average gross has been more than £267 million at the box office. He most notably starred as ‘Wong’ in the Doctor Strange franchise and is set to star in the sequel ‘Multiverse of Madness’ due to be released in 2022. His five films have grossed more than £1.3 billion in total – a full £500 million more than the UK’s next most bankable male film star.
In second place is Daniel Kaluuya, with an average gross of £145 million for his five leading roles. His most notable feature is his role as Chris in the 2017 horror movie ‘Get Out’ which received mass critical acclaim upon its release, grossing more than £190 million worldwide. Writers Guild of America West recently voted the film as the best screenplay of the 21st century.
Tom Hiddleston takes third place with an average gross of £138 million across his 13 leading roles. His most notable role is as ‘Loki’ in the Avengers franchise, with ‘Avengers: Endgame’ grossing more than £2.3 billion alone at the worldwide box office. He recently starred in the same role in the ‘Loki’ TV series, which began streaming on Disney+ earlier this year.

Tom Holland also makes the list, placing in sixth with an average gross of £127 million across his 15 leading roles. As well as his leading roles in the upcoming Uncharted movie, The Impossible and Onward, his most notable role is as the new Spiderman in the Marvel franchise with the highly anticipated ‘No Way Home’ due to be released in December.
Also making the list is Benedict Cumberbatch, with an average gross of £121 million across his 16 leading roles, making him the UK’s eighth most bankable male film star. In addition to his leading roles in ‘The Imitation Game’, ‘Star Trek’ and ‘The Hobbit’ he is most notably known for playing Doctor Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He most recently starred in Oscars frontrunner ‘The Power of the Dog’ alongside Kirsten Dunst, which released in early November to UK audiences on Netflix.
Commenting on the findings, a spokesperson from Poker Listings said: “It’s fascinating to see veteran actors like Andy Serkis appear on the list alongside younger actors like Tom Holland and Daniel Kaluuya. This not only shows the raw talent of the UK film industry, but also a promising future ahead of the tail end of the COVID-19 pandemic. With box office records always being broken, we can expect these numbers to grow even more across the next few years.”
