France makes the BEST wine in the world

  • France tops the list as the best winemaking country thanks to the most international wine awards
  • Spain is the second best at making wine, followed by Italy in third
  • The top three countries have won more than 60% of the awards over the past three years

France is the best country for making wine, new research has revealed.

The study by kitchen experts Maxima Kitchen Equipment analysed multiple wine award ceremonies over the past three yearsincluding International Wine Challenge, Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, Sommeliers Choice Awards, and Decanter Awards to find out which country produces the best wine.

Analysis of the data revealed that France is the best country for wine, earning 851 top awards at the ceremonies, 24% of all medals won by countries on the list. France earned 29% of the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles awards, 692 of the 2,389 given out. French wine comes from all over the country, with the region Bordeaux being famous for red wines such as Merlot, and the region Champagne producing the famous sparkling wine, Champagne.

Coming in at second on the list is Spain, which won 22% of the top awards. Out of the 794 medals Spain earned, 677 of them are from the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles ceremony, over 85% of their total awards won. Famous wines from Spain include Cava, Rioja and Grenache.

Italy is third on the list of best countries for wine. It received 512 top medals, 14.5% of awards earned by countries on the list. Like France and Spain, Concours Mondial de Bruxelles is the ceremony that Italy earned most of their awards, with 392 coming from the ceremony. Italy is well known for red wines such as Chianti and Barolo and its sparkling wine, Prosecco.

At fourth on the list is Portugal, which has won 12.6% of the highest awards earned by the countries on the list. Portugal performed well at all the ceremonies, placing in the top five medal earners in three of them.

The first non-European country to appear on the list, the USA, comes in at fifth. The country won 352 awards, just below 10% of awards given to countries on the list. The USA earned most of their awards from the Sommelier’s Choice Awards, with 97% coming from the ceremony.

Sixth place is Australia, which received 133 of the 3540 awards given to the countries on the list, with 3.76% of total awards earned. Australia earned the third most awards at the International Wine Challenge ceremony with 42, just behind Spain’s 43.

Chile ranks seventh on the list, with 2.88% of the highest medals won by countries. The first South American country to appear on the list earned most of its awards from the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles ceremony, with 80 of the 102 awards coming from the ceremony.

South Africa is the only African country to appear on the list in eighth place, with 93 awards earned. Greece comes in at ninth after earning 59 top honours from the ceremonies. Argentina finishes off the top ten with 51 top medals won in the three years.

A spokesperson for Maxima Kitchen Equipment commented on the study, saying:

“Wine is a favourite drink worldwide, with 23.4 billion litres being consumed a year, and has been in Europe for thousands of years. It is fascinating to see how well different countries around the world are at making wine.

“The data shows that France is the best country for wine, and is one of four Mediterranean countries in the top ten, showing how vital climate is for producing wine.”
