Analysis of Google search data reveals that online searches for “Sell Xbox” exploded 475% in the United Kingdom on 31st January 2022, the same day Sony purchased Bungie for $3.6 billion.
Analysis by gaming site Solitaired reveals that online interest for selling Xbox skyrocketed to almost six times the average volume in one day as the owners of Playstation acquire Bungie.
A spokesperson from Solitaired commented on the findings:
“The console wars between Xbox and Playstation have been going on for over two decades now and the fight is still strong. Two weeks ago, owners of Xbox, Microsoft, purchased one of the biggest companies in the gaming industry, Activision-Blizzard. On Monday, Sony, owners of Playstation, also purchased a big name in the gaming world, Bungie, to help compete with Xbox. It’s interesting to see that the original creators of the hit Xbox exclusive series, Halo, is now owned by their main competitor.
“These findings offer a fascinating insight into the reaction towards these recent events and if Xbox owners will question their loyalty to the brand. It will be interesting to see the extent that these acquisitions have on the industry, especially for Nintendo, which is also in the ‘console wars’ that has been struggling to compete with the duopoly of Xbox and Playstation.”
