New analysis has found that the southwest region of the UK is the country’s most dangerous place to work.
The study by A-Plan Insurance examined the Labour Force Survey to reveal the region in the UK that is most susceptible to workplace injuries based on the most non-fatal injuries reported over the past three years.
No workplace is completely free from injury, be it a construction site or doctors’ surgery however some areas of the UK appear more prone to accidents than others.
In total, there have been 2,260 injuries per 100,000 people in the southwest over the past three years, meaning that workers in large cities such as Bristol, Bath and Plymouth are statistically more likely to suffer an injury than average across Great Britain.
Yorkshire and the Humber comes in second as the most dangerous area in the UK for workplace accidents. Over the past three years, the area has seen 2,220 accidents per 100,000. This is higher than the average number of accidents across Britain for the past year.
The Northeast is the third most dangerous area in UK for workplace accidents. Over the past three years there has been an average of 2,140 accidents reported per 100,000.
Placing as the fourth most dangerous region in the UK is the East Midlands. This area has reported 2,110 workplace accidents.
Coming in below the 2,000-accident mark is the Northwest with 1,890 reported workplace accidents, placing it as the fifth most accident-prone area.
Wales is the sixth most dangerous area in the UK for workplace accidents, having reported 1,890 accidents per 100,000 people over the past three years.
The southeast, which is home to areas such as Oxfordshire, Hampshire and Surrey and has seen 1,850 workplace accidents for every 100,000 people over the past three years. The Southeast places seventh in the rankings.
London has seen the lowest rate of accidents out of all regions in the UK, at 1,240 per 100,000. London has one million businesses, the most of any region in the country in the UK.
Scotland sees considerably less workplace accidents than areas of England such as the Southwest or Northwest with 1,550 accidents per 100,000 people.
Commenting on the figures, a spokesperson for A-Plan Insurance said “With the pandemic, the working world has changed the amount of physical jobs people could partake in. However, the UK has still seen a large number of workplace accidents across the country. It is imperative to increase the safety of the UK workforce and reduce the number of accidents reported”.
