- Vauxhall is Wales’ most popular car make
- Ford is the UK’s favourite car brand in five regions, the most of any car brand
- Volkswagen has the second-highest number of regions
- American and German car brands dominate the UK car market
Ford is the UK’s favourite car manufacturer, new research has revealed.
The research conducted by car experts CarInsurance.ae analysed government data of cars first registered in 2020 in each region in the UK to show every region’s favourite car make.
Analysis revealed that Ford is the most sold car brand in more regions than any other with three regions in England, North West, West Midlands, and the East, along with the car brand being on top in Scotland and Northern Ireland. Ford was most popular in the East of England, where 16.14% of newly registered cars were Ford. The American brand also owns the most popular car model in the UK with the Ford Fiesta.
Volkswagen is the second most popular overall, with the brand being top in three regions in the UK, the North East, East Midlands, and South East. The South East is the biggest fan of Volkswagen cars, where 13.14% of cars registered for the first time were Volkswagen.
In London, the most popular car brand was Toyota, where it had 9,993 newly registered vehicles, equalling 9.31% of all new cars in the UK capital. Toyota offers a wide range of hybrid and electric cars, even a hydrogen-powered car, making it a desirable brand with the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) in place in London.
The most popular car make in the South West is Mercedes-Benz, with 20,299 new cars being sold by the manufacturer, meaning 10.57% of all new cars are from Mercedes-Benz. The company that created the first car is well known for offering luxury, high-quality cars.
Yorkshire’s favourite car brand is the German manufacturer, BMW. The luxury car brand had more than 19,300 new cars registered, roughly 14% of all cars registered for the first time in the region.
Vauxhall is Wales’ most popular car brand, where the British car brand had 7,373 new cars registered, which is 12.18% of all newly registered cars. The most popular Vauxhall car in the UK is the famous hatchback, Vauxhall Corsa.
Commenting on the findings, a spokesperson for CarInsurance.ae said: “This study offers incredible insight into the UK’s favourite car brands and how it differs between regions. The data shows that Ford is the most popular throughout the UK, which shows the loyalty of the British public to the American car brand. However, other than Ford, German car brands dominate the UK car market, being the most popular in five regions.”
