Analysis of Google search data reveals that online searches for ‘Cancel NatWest Card’ spiked by 900% after the high street bank announced 32 branch closures. NatWest says the closures are due to the increased demand for mobile and online services and the change in the way people bank in recent years.

A new finding by Income Tax Calculator UK revealed that searches for NatWest’s rival Barclays had seen an increase in interest, with ‘Get a Barclays card’ skyrocketing to more than 455% the average in one day, on the 15th of February after the news of the bank closures from NatWest.

A spokesperson for Income Calculator UK commented on the findings:

”It’s interesting to see how the pandemic has affected our consumer habits and our high streets, with more people than ever turning to mobile banking as it’s faster and more efficient. However, many customers prefer in-store banking, especially the elderly community who rely on their high street bank for access to their finances and will be less likely to bank online.”
