New research reveals that Baileys is the most popular alcohol brand in the UK.
The study was carried out by online gaming review expert Lucky Creek, which examined alcohol brands based on Google search data and YouGov ratings of their fame (how many people recognise the brand) and their popularity. Each drink was assigned an overall score calculated from their performance in each category to discover the UK’s favourite alcohol brand.
Baileys came out on top as the UK’s favourite alcohol brand with an overall score of 10. The Irish alcohol brand is the second most well-known brand with a 97% fame score and tops the list for with a popularity score of 60% in the UK. It also has the second highest number of average monthly searches at 86,000.
In second is the American whiskey brand Jack Daniel’s with an overall score of 9.37. Despite being around 20% less popular in the UK than Baileys, it takes second place for its fame with 97% of British people knowing the brand and tops the list in terms of average monthly searches at 90,000.
Guinness is in third and follows closely behind Jack Daniel’s with an overall score of 9.33. The Irish beer brand is more favoured by the public than Jack Daniel’s with a popularity score of 56% however, Guinness places third for monthly Google searches with 72,000, 18,000 less searches than Jack Daniel’s, making it the third favourite alcohol brand in the UK.
In fourth is another British brand Beefeater, which has an overall score of 8. The gin producer is the fourth most searched brand in the list with 60,000 searches per month. 89% of people have heard of the brand according to YouGov but just 44% of people like the brand’s products, making it the fourth most popular alcohol brand.
The Dutch beer brand Heineken is fifth in the list with an overall score of 7.77. It places third regarding how well-known the brand is with a fame score of 96%. In terms of popularity, Heineken is more popular than Beefeater with a popularity score of 49% however, the brand has just 31,000 average monthly searches.
A spokesperson for Lucky Creek commented on the findings: “Stereotypically, Britain has been known for its love of a good drink compared to other countries. Between 2019 and 2020, alcohol expenditure in the UK increased by approximately £5 billion whilst we were in and out of the pandemic lockdowns and these findings provide an interesting insight into what brands Brits are choosing to spend so much money on with so much available on the market these days”.
