According to Heatable over half of your gas bill is spent on heating. This figure increases dramatically for families that still use an old gas boiler. informative news blog.

Homeowners that noticed an increase in energy prices in recent months will need to brace themselves for the coming winter. With the energy price cap in the UK set for an uplift of almost £700 in April, utility costs are set to surge.

Energy-saving experts say inefficient home boilers will make gas bills even more expensive. Old boilers that are more than 10 years old can inflate the cost of your gas bill by as much as 40%.

Legacy boilers with a G-rated certificate only utilise 60% of the heat they produce. This will add even more cost to your already expensive gas bill. The good news is, the additional 40% on your gas bill can be avoided.
Servicing Your Boiler

Boilers naturally become less efficient over time. However, you can prolong their lifespan and make them more efficient with regular servicing and maintenance.

Depending on the age of your boiler, an annual service should be sufficient. Boilers over a decade old may need servicing twice a year.

Having your boiler serviced by a gas safe engineer also improves the reliability of your heating system and ensures they are safe to use. In worst-case scenarios, old gas boilers can leak carbon monoxide. The NHS record around 60 deaths a year caused by breathing in poisonous fumes.

It’s recommended that homeowners with an old boiler carry out regular spot checks – even during summer when the boiler is not being used. Periodically run your system for 30 minutes and investigate for leaks, rust or strange noises.

The hike in energy prices, plus the £80 it costs to service your boiler, could prove to be more costly than replacing your old boiler with a new energy-efficient unit.

Converting to an Energy Efficient Boiler

Estimates published by Energy Savings Trust indicate that detached households could save as much as £365 a year by switching from a G-rated boiler to an energy-efficient system manufactured by a leading boiler brand

In accordance with government regulations, the minimum standard for new boilers is a 92% efficiency rating – AAA+. New energy-efficient heaters are designed to generate tangible savings and give homeowners more control over how much energy you consume.
With fossil fuel heating systems scheduled to be phased out from 2025, householders have no option other than to switch to an energy-efficient heating system.

Upgrading your existing heating system to a new AAA+ model is likely to save you up to 35% on your gas bill – and potentially up to 75% of your existing gas bill if you old boiler is causing your energy bill to soar.

New energy-efficient boilers are typically over 90% more efficient than legacy boilers and will not need servicing as often. The more efficient your boiler is, the less energy you use.
