Many people will suffer from back pain at some point in their life, although the causes can vary. If one area of the multiple bones, muscles, discs, ligaments, or tendons that make up the back is injured, it can cause pain which may be so severe it can be hard to carry out typical daily tasks. Sleep expert Andrea Strand from Eachnight has revealed that the type of mattress you have may be contributing to your back pain and has recommended different types to help ease it.
What is the cause of my back pain?
There are a variety of factors that may cause back pain, from muscle sprains to osteoporosis. If your back pain has lasted longer than 12 weeks, it is considered chronic and may be caused by factors such as arthritis or your mattress. It is recommended that you see a doctor if your pain has lasted longer than four weeks.
How can my mattress cause back pain?
A mattress which doesn’t best suit you and your preferred sleeping position can put pressure on your back muscles and lead to spinal misalignment. Your mattress should allow your back muscles to relax by keeping your spine in a neutral and safe position.
Which mattress should I have to limit back pain?
The type of mattress that will best suit you will differ based on your preferred sleeping position. If you are a side sleeper, you will want to find a mattress that provides cushioning for the hips and joints and protects them from pressure points. For side sleepers, a mattress with soft to medium firmness is recommended.
A back sleeper will want a mattress that keeps the body weight evenly distributed so the spine can stay aligned with the shoulders and hips. A medium to medium-firm mattress will likely be the most comfortable for a back sleeper.
It is advised that you avoid stomach sleeping if you suffer from back pain. Sleeping on your stomach increases pressure on the joints of the spine due to it being forced into a bow in this position. However, most stomach sleepers will prefer a firmer mattress to avoid back pain.
It is also advised that you avoid mattresses that sink excessively as this can cause one part of the body to sink far into the bed, causing back muscles to tighten and the spine to be pushed into an unnatural position.
Will my back pain last forever?
The likelihood is no. The back is made up of a complex structure of ligaments and muscles, and if one area which becomes affected, it may lead to pain in your whole back. With the right care and attention, most back pain will not become chronic, and you can return to your normal routine. If back pain persists, see a doctor.
