Leaders of Plaid Cymru-led councils have written to Welsh voters ahead of local elections

From innovative thinking on housing, early action during the pandemic, and supporting families through the cost of living crisis, Plaid Cymru-led councils have been making a difference to the lives of thousands of households across Wales.

In a joint letter to Welsh voters, the leaders of the four Plaid Cymru-led councils in Wales have set out exactly how they’ve protected the things that have kept Welsh communities moving.

During the pandemic, Carmarthenshire Council built the first emergency hospital, Ceredigion Council developed one of the first contact tracing systems, Gwynedd Council set up a cross-agency Covid Support Team overnight, and Ynys Môn council were the first to realise the need for CO2 monitors in schools.

It’s our innovative, people-first approach that really makes the difference to our communities” says Ynys Môn council’s leader, Llinos Medi Huws. Ynys Môn Council quickly noticed the need for schools to remain open as support hubs, welcoming in vulnerable children, those who were eligible for free school meals and the children of key workers.

Cllr Llinos Medi explains that it’s the foresight of Plaid Cymru-led councils that have been on the front foot in tackling the twin challenges of rising cost of living and climate crises:

“In the face of Tory austerity and Labour mismanagement, our councils have supported local food banks – practically and financially. We’ve set up food share schemes, and our councillors have been involved in food banks, food waste projects and food distribution centres all across Wales.

“Similarly, when the storms struck, Plaid councillors were there. From Pont Fawr Llanrwst to Pontypridd and the Rhondda valleys, we supported residents and fought for greater investment in flooding defences when Labour just weren’t listening.”

Cllr Llinos Medi went on to say:

“A vote for Plaid Cymru on May 5th is a vote for your community and for protecting the things which matter to you – that is why we are asking you to judge us on our record of responding to the pandemic, protecting our young people and supporting the local economy.”
