- Sofas are the most Googled items of furniture that people want to buy second hand
- Chairs – dining, gaming, arm – are a close second, while tables are third
- Other furniture pieces which make the top ten include beds, cabinets and even pianos
Sofas are the furniture piece which people look to buy second hand the most, a new study has revealed.
The study, conducted by second hand retailer for-sale.co.uk, has analysed a list of common and popular furniture and discovered which piece is the most searched on Google when side by side with terms such as “second hand” or “used”.
Sofas appear to be the most popular when it comes to looking for used pieces, with 34,030 average monthly searches, ranging from loveseats to sofa beds and corner sofas. Sofas can be extremely expensive when bought new, with a price range that goes from £300 to £3,000 and more, prompting many to look at cheaper options, with plenty of second-hand pieces often in mint condition.
Second on the list are second hand chairs with 30,840 monthly searches. Good and sturdy chairs often range from £20 to £100 for one piece, and with most buyers usually keen to purchase at least two chairs for their dining table, the prices pile up easily. With the increased popularity of working from home, office and gaming chairs can be another considerable huge expense if bought new, ranging from £100 to £1000.
Tables are the third most Googled second-hand furniture pieces with 15,250 average monthly searches. Searches vary from dining tables and coffee tables to folding tables, which are often the best option for smaller spaces. However, smaller or more functional does not always mean cheaper, with average prices for folding tables ranging from £30 to £300.
Fourth on the list is beds with 13,650 average monthly searches, which also includes bed frames and headboards. This essential piece of furniture can typically be the most expensive piece in the bedroom.
The top five closes with the generic search for cabinets, which also includes kitchen cabinets and filing cabinets with almost 12,000 monthly searches.

Commenting on the study, a spokesperson from for for-sale.co.uk said: “Furniture is without doubt a huge expense for any family or individual, but at the same time it is an essential one, which leaves many often having to decide between quality and cheaper prices.”
“Buying second-hand is often the best decision for many, as several benefits can come from a single decision: you can save money without sacrificing the quality of indispensable products such as a sofa or a bed and you can also reduce your carbon footprint buying something that has already been used.
“This dataset shows that plenty of people are interested in buying many different types of furniture second hand, which is encouraging news for both people’s wallets and the environment.”
The study was conducted by for-sale.co.uk, which is part of an international network of search engines for second-hand products that allows users to search through ads from a wide range of websites for used products and items.
