Owners of a mid-Wales chip shop are celebrating its 40th anniversary by raising money for the Bronglais Chemo Appeal.
Back in June 1982, Mr Hennighan senior opened Hennighan’s Top Shop in Machynlleth and 40 years later the Hennighan family is preparing to celebrate the award-winning chip shop’s ruby anniversary.
Close to the Hennighans’ hearts is the new chemotherapy day unit being planned for
Bronglais Hospital. The family hope to raise a substantial amount towards the Appeal which aims to raise the final £500,000 needed for construction work to start.
Jemma Hennigan said: “When we did a fundraising effort over Christmas, we found that a lot of our town folk supported the building of a new chemotherapy unit at Bronglais Hospital.
“To celebrate, Hennighan’s are planning several events throughout our anniversary year, starting with everyone’s favourite – a scratch card scheme.
“The plan is to have 5,000 cards to sell at £2 each. After costs it is estimated that this scheme will raise approximately £8,750 towards the new chemotherapy unit.
“We are approaching all suppliers, local shops, and local attractions to ask if they would be able to donate a prize for this little fundraiser. It could be a prize related to their business or a donation of a product, voucher, etc.
“Small prizes will include various items off Hennighan’s menu, and one main prize of fish and chips once a week for a whole year.
“Any donations of prizes would be very welcomed, and businesses’ sponsorship of this venture would be made very clear and public.
“We hope to launch the fundraiser at the beginning of June which happens to be the Jubilee weekend so a double whammy there – and on 25 June, we will be selling fish and chips for just £1 for the day!”
Any local businesses who can help with prizes or sponsorship are asked to email hennighanstopshop@gmail.com or phone Jemma on 07977 271899 by Sunday, 10th April.
The Bronglais Chemo Appeal was launched at the end of November last year and there has been great support from the local communities of Ceredigion, Gwynedd and Powys for the Appeal.
Over 60 people a week receive vital anti-cancer treatment at Bronglais Hospital, a total of around 300 people a year. A new chemotherapy day unit will provide a greatly improved experience for patients in a modern, fit-for-the-future facility that is tailored for patients at different stages of their illness.
