Within the next week, millions of children – and quite a few adults – will be opening delicious Easter eggs without a second thought of the amount of waste to which they’re contributing. That is a single-use plastic nightmare!

Britain’s top waste and recycling companies estimate that over 80 million Easter eggs containing single-use plastics are out there this year.

Recycling and waste management company BusinessWaste.co.uk is reminding chocolate loving citizens that Easter egg boxes, foil wrappers and plastic eggs can all be recycled.

BusinessWaste.co.uk has put together some top tips to help you recycle your Easter egg packaging:

1. The box

Recycle the boxes your chocolate Easter eggs come in – they are made from cardboard, so just flatten them before you put them in the recycling bin to give more space for other recyclables.

2. The foil

Many chocolate Easter eggs are wrapped in foil, which can be recycled. Just think of all those famous Cadbury crème eggs over 500 million are produced each year so that’s a lot of foil that can be recycled.

3. The plastic moulds

The plastic moulds that protect the egg can be recycled as they are made from PET, the same plastic that is used to make plastic bottles. Just make sure they are clean, as that will make them easier to recycle.

4. Recycle your Easter cards

Once you have finished displaying your Easter cards from loved ones, make sure you recycle them in your green bin too.

Mark Hall, co-founder of BusinessWaste.co.uk comments on Easter egg packaging, “Easter eggs create a frightening amount of packing that ends up in landfill every Easter, with retailers not doing enough to reduce waste and make them more recyclable.  We hope that our top tips helps Brits to do their bit to recycle and help save more Easter egg packaging from going to landfill.”
