Advice to Businesses
“As employees return to the office, access control management is easy to overlook. With staff working largely from home for the past two years, companies need to re-evaluate the effectiveness of their access controls to ensure they’re safe, secure, and fit for purpose.
When reviewing access controls, there are two key areas to consider: technology and people.
From a technology standpoint, you need to make sure all access systems are running on up-to-date software, providing the securest solution for your premises. Test and update equipment before staff return to the office, and be sure to issue new starters with access cards in good time so you can track their attendance and working hours.
If your access tech has been relatively unused throughout the pandemic, we’d recommend a full refresh. Reset and update management systems to ensure maximum protection and security; this will also help to avoid any access and admin issues for staff returning to the workplace.
For returning staff, a training refresher course may be required to get them back up to speed with the rules and guidance on access control management. This may sound like a waste of time and resources, but it’s an important step in ensuring optimal security and flexible access and movement for your personnel.
In the training, be sure to cover access security basics, including the need to keep key cards, fobs, and passcodes safe. You should also explain the types of information you gather from access controls and how this data is used, e.g., to track employee attendance.
And in light of the ongoing pandemic, hygiene should play a larger role in managing access controls. Make sure access control points are cleaned regularly, with antibacterial cleaning products readily available for staff.”
