Sweden has been named the safest country to cycle in Europe, according to new research from Myprotein – https://www.myprotein.com/thezone/motivation/where-are-the-safest-countries-to-cycle-in-europe/
There are over 2.2 billion cycling holidays booked in Europe each year, with more and more people planning fitness-focussed holidays. And when you’re on a cycling holiday, it’s important that you feel safe. So, where are the safest places to cycle in Europe?
Myprotein ranked 31 different countries, judging them against 5 different cycling safety criteria: annual cyclist deaths, air pollution levels, the percentage of total journeys carried out on bicycles (modal share), the amount of cycle routes available and whether or not the country has a National Cycling Strategy in place.
Sweden took the top spot, thanks to a relatively low number of accidents, low pollution levels and excellent National Cycling Strategy. Luxembourg took second place, with the highest amount of available cycling routes, while the Netherlands came in third, with the highest modal share of all 31 countries at 27%.
At the other end of the table, Bulgaria was named as the most dangerous country for cycling in Europe, with high accident and pollution rates and a low modal share and route availability.
