The most popular used car brands, according to Google

• BMW is the top car brand people want to buy used, averaging over 78,800 searches a month 
• Audi and Mercedes take second and third respectively 
• Porsche and Land Rover also make the list 

BMWs are the cars people want to buy used the most, according to new research.  

The study, conducted by selling site for-sale.co.uk, analysed Google searches for all car brands in the UK to see which brand is most wanted when buying a used car. 

It found that BMWs were the top brand for used cars, with over 78,800 searches every month. The most popular model of used BMW was the 1 series, with over 12,000 searches for the model alone. Other popular models included the 3 series and the X3. BMWs were by far the most popular, with a gap of nearly 20,000 between second place and first place. 

Another German brand came in second place, as Audis receive more than 59,000 searches a month from people looking to buy a used car. The most popular model was the Audi A1, with more than 13,000 searches a month. Other popular models included the Audi A3 and Q3. 

Finishing the top three of German brands is Mercedes-Benz, with more than 50,000 searches a month for used options. The most popular models were the Mercedes A-Class, with more than 9,000 searches a month, followed by the C-class and the GLA.  

Ford comes in fourth place with more than 21,800 searches a month for used vehicles. Ford’s most popular model to buy used was the Fiesta, with 8,000 searches a month for the model. Nearly half of all used Ford searches came for the Fiesta. Other popular models included the Kuga and Focus. 

Rounding out the top five, Mini came in fifth place with more than 17,300 searches a month. The most popular used model was the Mini Cooper, with more than 6,000 searches a month, followed by the Countryman and the Clubman. 

Porsche came in seventh place, with 14,300 searches for used cars from the sports car manufacturer. Porsche’s most wanted used model was the Cayenne, with more than 4,700 searches a month. Other popular models included the 911 and the Macan.  

Finishing the top ten was Land Rover, with more than 12,000 searches a month for used cars from the off-road vehicle brand. The most popular used model was the Land Rover Discovery, with more than 7,000 searches a month. Other popular models included the Defender and Evoque. 

Commenting on the findings, a spokesperson from For-sale.co.uk said: “It’s clear from these findings that the idea of owning a used luxury car is appealing to many, with the likes of BMW, Mercedes and Porsche appearing on the list. It’s also interesting to see the dominance of German brands, with them making up five places on the list.”
