As supply chain issues continue to impact product supply to retailers, I’m getting in touch with some original data on how 40% of Brits can’t distinguish genuine items from fakes and tips for spotting a fake product listing online.

Business software provider Intact has conducted this research to reveal some interesting insights that would be highly relevant to your readers. Please refer to our research here: https://www.intactsoftware.com/blog/how-supply-chain-issues-are-fuelling-a-rise-in-fraudulent-products/

Intact surveyed 1,000 UK shoppers, including those from Wales, testing if they could distinguish a real item from a fake and found that:

  • Wales is one of the regions least likely to buy fake products without realising, according to our survey
  • The region scored an average 63% correct answers in identifying fraudulent online listings, beaten only by the East and North East
  • This means Wales is more digitally savvy than many other parts of the UK, including the capital
  • Wales was most proficient in identifying a fake Chanel perfume listing, with a huge 82% recognising that it wasn’t genuine
  • However, other products such as an Apple TV device did catch the region out, with 61% of those in Wales failing to recognise the logo had been duped – showing just how sophisticated some fake products can be

  • Check the website you’re shopping on is reputable – does it have contact information and an address, is it on a secure website domain?
  • Look for past shopper reviews who have bought this product to verify validity
  • Is the price too good to be true?
  • Are there lots of spelling mistakes in the product description?
  • Does the product description match up to the brand’s own site one?
  • Is there good quality photography used of the product?
