In modern day dating culture, anything and everything can turn off a potential partner, including what emojis you use.
In a world of Tinder, Hinge and Bumble, online dating is more popular now than ever before.
And when it comes to emojis, there are no concrete guidelines on what and when to use them, so one mistake could see a potential new partner running for the hills, or worse, unmatching you!
With that being said, slots comparison site JohnSlots have revealed which emojis tend to give people the “Ick” by comparing results from a recent poll on Reddit. So, if you are currently looking for a plus one for your friend’s wedding in the summer, you may want to take note.
Let’s take a look and see if you agree with the results.
Coming in at number one as the emoji that gives people the ick the most is the slightly smiley face emoji, 🙂, with 221 votes. One Reddit user said: “I don’t know why but I find it so passive aggressive for some reason”, while another said: “Looks vaguely intimidating, slightly sociopathic even.”

But why can emojis turn off a potential match? Well, international dating coach and relationship expert Christiana Maxion has offered some insight.
Christina said: “Using emojis in messaging can be a turn-off as it shows a lack of effort. Never use emojis as a replacement for words in your bio. An all-emoji bio is super cringe.
“When online dating, cut to the chase and ask them out for an in-person date. Anyone can pretend or show up as an ideal partner via messaging, but you want to see if there’s any chemistry…so ask them out! Do you want to stop wasting time on the apps and see if there’s an actual connection? Quit the messaging and the emojis and meet up face to face.”
