The UK’s Art and Culture Hotspots Revealed

• New research has revealed the art and culture hotspots around the UK.
• Brighton, York, and Manchester were revealed as the most creative and cultured cities.
• The study looked at multiple factors including the number of creative jobs, night clubs, galleries, and museums, per 1000 people. 

Brighton, York, and Manchester have been revealed as the top art and culture hotspots in the UK, according to a new study.

The research, conducted by online art and design gallery SINGULART, looked at a variety of factors to create a formula that calculated where in the UK the most artistic and cultured cities are. The factors analysed included:

• Number of creative jobs per 1,000 people
• Number of creative courses at local Universities
• Number of night clubs per 1,000 people
• Number of theatres per 1,000 people
• Number of music venues per 1,000 people
• Number of galleries & museums per 1,000 people
• Number of live music shows per 1,000 people

In the top spot was Brighton. The colourful seaside town was revealed to have the highest number of galleries and museums, as well as live music shows, compared to anywhere else in the UK.

The top 10 cities were revealed as:

• Brighton
• York
• Manchester
• Leeds
• Newcastle upon Tyne
• Blackpool
• Cambridge
• Exeter
• Oxford
• Milton Keynes

York came in close second place in the research, having the highest number of creative university courses in the UK. The city also ranked highly for having a large volume of night clubs, ranking fifth for this factor. 

In third place for the most artistic and cultured city was Manchester. The city ranked highly for numerous factors including, the number of creative courses at the local universities, the number of live music venues as well as the volume of live music shows.  

The data also showed a clear north/south divide, with four of the cities in the top five based in the North. Brighton was the only southern city to appear in the top five.

Although it didn’t top the list, Blackburn was revealed to have the highest number of creative job roles per 1,000 people, showing a clear need for creative minds in the city.

Commenting on the study, Marion Sailhen, Chief Curator at SINGULART said “With so many creative individuals in the UK, we were interested to see which cities foster hotspots for art and culture, looking at varying factors that can implicate this from live music to nightlife.

“It was interesting to see the UK’s capital not rank in the top 10, with more Northern cities being revealed as major hubs for art and culture.”
