Ex-Brexit minister stands by his call for PM to resign
David Davis said he doesn’t regret his ‘In the name of God, go’ call in the Commons and that millions of supporters agree with him.
FORMER Brexit minister David Davis said he stands by his call for Boris Johnson to resign – and that MILLIONS of supporters agree with him.
In an infamous incident during Prime Minister’s Questions earlier this year, Mr Davis told him: “In the name of God, go.”
Now in an exclusive interview with GB News, Mr Davis heaped even more pressure on the Prime Minister, who today apologised following Sue Gray’s long-awaited report on Partygate.
Mr Davies opened up as part of a new series of political interviews called Life and Times With Big Beasts which will be screened on GB News tomorrow (Thursday)
Speaking to Gloria De Piero he insisted his argument that the Conservatives would suffer electorally if Mr Johnson stayed has proven to be true.
And when pressed on whether he regretted calling for the Prime Minister to step aside, Mr Davies defiantly said: “No, not at all. When I change my mind, I’ll let you know.
“What happened that morning (before PMQs) was that I was on my exercise bike…when he appeared to blame his subordinates. There was all this: ‘They didn’t tell me,’ all that sort of stuff.
“Now, I was brought up in business, in the military, in politics and then when I was a minister, to not blame your subordinates. You shoulder the responsibility.
“That was the point at which I thought it had just gone too far. I’d been defending him up until then.
“I thought, you know, if he doesn’t go, we’ll have death of a thousand cuts, the blame will spread to other Cabinet Ministers, then it will spread to the rest of Government, then it will spread to the rest of the party, and it will go on until Christmas.
“Well, so far, every single one of my predictions has been right.”
“I wasn’t denying he’d done a lot of good. He’d delivered Brexit and all these things and got us through Covid. I’d had my disputes about that, but never mind…
“I don’t regret it; I had a thousand enemies the next day. Well, later that day. But, since then, I’ve had a million supporters.
“It’s quite plain that no ordinary person, I mean, outside Boris’ circle – of course they’re cross with me, they’d be wrong not to be – but on the doorstep, on the train, in the streets, in the tearoom, everywhere, people say, ‘actually, you were right’.”
