The most trolled Twitch streamers revealed

They say only the great ones get haters. Unfortunately, though, streamers on Twitch know trolls, and bullies all too well, with most players being harassed daily. The negative comments try and disrupt the stream, often by insulting the streamers and viewers, leaving rude remarks, or even racial slurs!

To reveal which are the most trolled Twitch streamers, e-commerce retailer Ebuyer has used social listening data to come up with a top 30 list of the players who get the most hate online. Knowing how much of an effect cyberbullies can have on streamers’ mental health, Ebuyer has also spoken to Dr Dennis Relojo-Howell, the founder and managing director of the psychology website Psychreg to help people deal with the negativity online.

The most trolled Twitch streamers

Streaming various games, such as Minecraft or League of Legends, Ibai, who has won streamer of the year in 2020 as well as 2021, has 10.1 million followers on Twitch, but with his shared content, he also attracts the most internet trolls. There are 427,975 negative conversations surrounding the gamer, meaning that 28.7% of those commenting only joined the stream to spread their hate online!  

Coming in second is Spanish streamer Elded, primarily known for his Fortnite streams, with a 27.9% negative sentiment. That didn’t stop him though, with 6.359 hours on air since 2017!¹ Next up we have JuanSGuarnizo on third spot, who is mostly streaming Grand Theft Auto V, suffering 24.3% negative conversations as a result. On fourth spot we have Rubius, who also runs a fashion brand as a side hustle, recently launching a Rick and Morty collection. The streamer has 11.8 million followers, a huge number which unfortunately comes with 23.5% of viewers turning out to be bullies. World Record holder² for the most concurrent viewers for a Twitch stream, TheGrefg, comes in fifth with 18.9% of viewers spreading hateful comments. With a whopping 9.82 million followers, however, it’s not surprising that trolls will find their way onto his streams.

The 3 Twitch streamers receiving the least pushback

Even though Ninja has the most followers on Twitch (18.2 million), there are only 48,599 negative conversations, meaning a negative sentiment of a comparable low 6.84%. This could have something to do with the rules shared on his Twitch profile, asking people to be kind. With a negative sentiment of 4.09%, loltyler1 secures the 29^th spot and ESL_CSGO secures the 30^th spot with a negative sentiment of only 3.13%.

Top tips to deal with cyberbullying from a psychologist

So, knowing how many cyberbullies are out there, what is the best way to deal with them if you cannot simply go offline? Dr Dennis Relojo-Howell, the founder and managing director of the psychology website Psychreg, explains: ‘Because trolls thrive on provocation, the classic guideline ‘Don’t feed the trolls,’ should be your default behaviour when dealing with them. If that doesn’t work and they become more spammy or begin to clog up your feed, you can also report them to the site’s moderation team.’ – Dr Relojo-Howell continues ‘Now, for those who are in charge of a platform: say a blogger or a YouTube channel, you need to create a clear guideline that includes a ‘no trolling’ policy. I find that having these guidelines establishes impartiality and makes platforms remain civil. If moderating is taking much of your time, considering hiring a team to help can be a worthwhile investment.’
Dr Relojo-Howell adds: ‘If this doesn’t work, you can try ‘killing them with kindness’. It can be quite challenging to be nice to those who are rude to you, but since trolls are usually looking for a fight, reacting with an opposite approach can often catch them off guard and get them to stop.’

This attracts trolls as they’re actively trying to interrupt streams or insult people without thinking of the effects this may have on the streamer or other people watching. It is important to call these behaviours out and where possible report the comments to keep the platform a safe and fun environment for everyone.’
