Data Reveals The Most Listened To Songs In Each Room of the House

From belting out a ballad in the shower, to dancing to pop songs in the kitchen, we all love listening to music around the house, but do you have a preference for a playlist depending on the room you’re in?

New research from smart home specialists, Somfy, has revealed the songs we prefer to listen to in each room around the house.

Analysing over 1.24 million tracks across Spotify, the data has shown we have clear preferences when it comes to different rooms, however some artists have dominated across the house.

Kitchen
Often the social space of a house, it’s no surprise the most listened to songs in the kitchen are sing along hits. Securing first place as the most popular kitchen hit is Shape of You, Ed Sheeran, which boasts over 3 billion plays on Spotify, followed by Blinding Lights which is a close second with 2.9 billion plays.

Bathroom
A place of relaxation, the top bathroom hits definitely offer a melancholy feel, with songs reaching a maximum of just 115 BPM. However classic ballads are missing, with artists like Ed Sheeran and The Weeknd making the top list, showing a clear preference for modern and popular music.

Dining room
When sitting down to a meal, background music is ideal to play under conversation, which is why it’s no surprise piano heavy songs Falling and Someone You Loved take the top two spots. Interestingly, all the top dining room hits are from male artists, with Harry Styles taking two of the top five places.

Bedroom
When it comes to choosing music for the bedroom, romantic songs may be front of mind, but long gone are the days of Barry White and Lionel Richie, in fact all of the top five are artists released their hits between 2015 and 2017. The romantic theme isn’t all lost though, with Earned It from the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack taking second place.

Study
According to research, songs with a BPM of around 60-70 [i]are thought to be ideal for promoting concentration and stimulating learning, however the top five songs have shown a preference for slightly quicker music, reaching up to 124 BPM for The Neighbourhood’s popular song, Sweater Weather.

Living room
The living room playlist has proven it isn’t just a space to relax after a long day. While melodic indie songs from Artic Monkeys and The Neighbourhood make the list, amped up pop songs from Olivia Rodrigo prove the living room can double up as a party space.
