New research from sustainable coffee brand, Grind, has revealed Wales has a ‘size complex’ when it comes to recycling with almost two in five (40%) agreeing it’s more important to dispose of large items (e.g. boxes) ethically, rather than small items (e.g. coffee pods).

Mike Palmer Founder of Grind

On a mission to make sustainable choices easier for Brits, Grind has switched all of its coffee pods to its new home compostable pod, the first in the UK to be certified to decompose in a home composter in just 180 days.

This move comes at a time when half (50%) of Wales believe all coffee pods can be recycled, severely underestimating the 500+ years it can take for a plastic or aluminium coffee pod to decompose, with almost ALL (99%) of Welsh respondents believing it takes under 60 years to decompose. The majority (69%) of Welsh participants estimated plastic or aluminium coffee pods would decompose in UNDER four years.

Other Wales specific results include:

  • A THIRD (34%) of participants in Wales do their own home composting currently, however another THIRD (32%) state that don’t know where to start when it comes to composting and 22% thinking it’s too complicated to try
  • The majority (72%) of those in Wales believe they should be doing more to help the environment, with participants in the region already:
    • Reusing shopping bags (72%)
    • Buying second hand fashion (28%)
    • Buying from sustainable brands (32%)
    • Home composting (34%)
    • Growing their own food (28%)
  • A third (34%) of Wales admit to throwing their single use coffee pods straight in the bin
