ITV Cymru Wales and Cardiff University’s latest opinion poll has revealed that Boris Johnson’s popularity has taken a further battering with 63% of people saying he should resign – up 5% from our last poll.
Despite narrowly surviving the no-confidence vote earlier this month, the Prime Minister is likely to face even more pressure over the coming months.
The Barn Cymru poll conducted by YouGov for ITV Cymru Wales and Cardiff University, revealed that “liar” was the most popular word used to describe the Prime Minister, closely followed by “idiot” and “buffoon”.
In response to a similar question about First Minister Mark Drakeford, “Welsh”, “boring” and “trustworthy” were the most popular phrases to describe the Welsh Labour leader.
The poll showed little movement in Westminster voting intentions with the support for the main parties largely unchanged from our poll in March. Labour have a 15 point lead over the Conservatives and if that were to be replicated at an election it would see the Conservatives lose the bulk of the seats it won during the 2019 UK election. However, it’s worth remembering the next election is due to be fought on new boundaries with Welsh seats being reduced from 40 to 32.
Westminster Voting intentions:
- Labour 41 %
- Conservatives 26%
- Plaid Cymru 16% (+3)
- Liberal Democrats 7%
- Other 10% (-3%)
Owain Phillips, ITV Cymru Wales’ Political Correspondent said:
“The poll demonstrates that Boris Johnson is continuing to lose the confidence of the public and is left fighting for his political future. We’re pleased to be working with Cardiff University’s Wales Governance Centre who again have provided valuable insight and expertise in interpreting the results of the poll.”
Dr Jac Larner, Lecturer in Politics at Cardiff University’s Wales Governance Centre said:
“Boris Johnson’s numbers continue to decline, with 63% of respondents thinking Boris Johnson should resign, up from 58% in our previous poll. This includes over a third (36%) of current Conservative party supporters which is a very bad place for a party leader to.”
“Mark Drakeford will be far happier, with a plurality of respondents agreeing he’s trustworthy, competent, and decisive. Again, the numbers are not so kind for Boris Johnson, with only 10% of respondents seeing him as trustworthy, and less than a quarter see him as competent.”
Barn Cymru is a collaborative partnership between ITV Cymru Wales, the Wales Governance Centre at Cardiff University, and the leading polling agency YouGov. The poll aims to provide an insight into people’s beliefs, attitudes and opinions and to gain real-time feedback on public views in Wales.
YouGov polled a representative sample of 1,020 Welsh voters, aged 16+, between 12th and 16th June 2022 for ITV Cymru Wales and Cardiff University.
