  • The Queen’s sleep routine generates the biggest buzz online, and is searched 136% more on average than the routines of all other Royals.
  • Prince Harry and Kate Middleton spark the second and third highest interest online regarding their sleep habits, followed by Meghan Markle.

New research reveals that the Queen has the most Googled royal sleep routine – beating Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle.

The research, by bedding experts Bed Kingdom, analysed Google trends data for the sleep routines of the key members of the royal family, to discover which one generated the most searches. The study created a ranking which scored each royal’s sleep routine, based on the average interest it caused over the last year.

According to Bed Kingdom, Queen Elizabeth’s bedtime routine habits spark 136% more interest than the sleep routines of all royals surveyed. The Queen, who is famous for the longevity and consistency of her reign, may owe her long life to her active lifestyle and sleep hygiene. The Queen sleeps 8.5 hours a night, which is well within the healthy sleep range of an adult in the UK, who should be getting 8-9 hours a night. To sleep as well as The Queen, you should go to bed at the same time every night (Her Majesty retires at 11pm), which will train your body to feel automatically sleepy as you approach your designated bedtime, ensuring a better night’s rest. The Queen and her late husband Prince Philip also used to sleep in different bedrooms to each get a better night’s sleep.

Eating light, protein-filled and regular meals like The Queen is also a good enhancer of sleep. The Queen is partial to fish and vegetables and reportedly a light breakfast of Special K with fruit, which will give her slow-burn energy and keep her fresh throughout a busy royal schedule, saving sleepiness for bedtime. The Queen also takes light, daily exercise in the form of walking – a useful method of releasing endorphins, which can lead to a more relaxing night’s sleep.

Most Popular Royal Sleep Routines
Rank Royal Google trends ranking for ‘sleep’
1. The Queen 31.0
2. Prince Harry 17.0
3. Kate Middleton 13.5
4. Meghan Markle 7.5
5. Prince William 7.3
6. Prince Phillip 6.6
7. Princess Diana 5.5
8. Prince Charles 3.7

The second most popular royal sleep routine belongs to Prince Harry. In 2018, Prince Harry made waves worldwide by wearing an Oura sleep ring – a high-tech piece of jewellery which tracks the wearer’s sleep and fitness levels, when on tour in Australia with his wife, Meghan Markle. The Oura ring tracks steps, workouts and calories, allowing the Duke of Sussex to stay aware of his fitness and sleep hygiene at all times. According to Google trends, searches for ‘Oura ring’ exploded 900% when Prince Harry was photographed wearing his in October 2018.

Kate Middleton’s sleep habits are also among the most searched. The Duchess of Cambridge’s tip for a great night’s sleep is not to eat too close to bedtime (6 to 7pm is an ideal dinner time, depending on when your bedtime is), as your stomach working to digest food can keep you awake just as you’re trying to drift off. Kate is also a big fan of exercise to enhance wellbeing, by engaging in CrossFit, a form of high-intensity interval training that exerts enough energy during the day to create a great night’s sleep.

Meghan Markle has the fourth most popular sleep routine on the list. To ensure quality sleep, the Duchess of Sussex does not drink coffee or other caffeinated drinks in the afternoon, reaching for an energising fruit smoothie instead. As caffeine stays in the body for several hours after it is consumed, it can affect the body’s production of melatonin – the sleep hormone – and interfere with getting enough deep sleep. Meghan Markle also regularly practices yoga, a restorative form of exercise which combats anxiety and helps you wind down naturally before bed.

A spokesperson for Bed Kingdom commented on the findings: “Comfortable and sufficient sleep is so important for mental and physical rest, especially for the busy lives of the royal family.

Despite being crowded by the hectic duties of a Monarch for the last 70 years, the Queen remains dedicated to staying healthy at the age of 96, so it comes as no surprise that the public search eagerly to learn the Queen’s secrets to a long healthy life”.

The analysis was conducted by Bed Kingdom, which is the UK’s leading online retailer for bedroom furniture for children and adults.
