Prince William is appearing alone for the first time on gold sovereign coins as part of a commemorative release to mark his upcoming 40th birthday today (Tuesday 21st June).
In the same month as the nation has come together to celebrate The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, her grandson – and the country’s future King – Prince William also reaches a milestone birthday, meaning multiple commemorations for the Royal House of Windsor.
To mark the occasion, the world’s first Portrait Sovereigns of the Duke of Cambridge, created by rare coin specialists Hattons of London, have been released – just days before he turns 40.
And in a wonderful show of support, Hattons of London have agreed to give 10% of all net profits on sales to the Armed Forces charity SSAFA – the Soldiers’, Sailors’, Airmen’s and Families Association – which provides lifelong support for members of the Forces and their families.
Like many members of the Royal Family, Prince William maintains strong ties to the British Armed Forces, with whom he served more than seven years full-time, including three years as an RAF Search and Rescue Pilot.
Gold sovereign coins are reserved for events of major significance and these new coins are no exception. Second in line to the British throne, Prince William will, in all likelihood, have gold sovereigns in his own name one day.
Prince William has previously only appeared on sovereign coins issued for his engagement and wedding, and always alongside the Duchess of Cambridge. These new sovereigns for his 40th birthday are the first time he appears alone, making them his first ever Portrait Sovereigns.
Simon Mellinger, Hattons of London Managing Director, said: “Turning 40 is a significant milestone in anyone’s life, but perhaps even more so for a future King. To celebrate this landmark moment, we have produced this new series of sovereign coins. What makes them so special is that they are the first Portrait Sovereigns ever to feature Prince William.
“We felt this collection was a fitting tribute to Prince William on his 40th birthday. His compassion and dedication are evident to all. He continues to be extremely passionate about his roles in promoting mental health awareness, conservation and support for the Armed Forces, which is why we felt that it would be appropriate that net profits from the sales go to support SSAFA, the Armed Forces Charity.”
Hattons of London is a leading expert in rare and exclusive coins with a vast collection including the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee ranges and the Queen Victoria 200th anniversary range.
Earlier this year, the world’s first gold sovereign coins to be minted with platinum gold – created by Hattons of London to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee – sold out in record time, less than three weeks following their launch.
The 2022 Prince William 40th Birthday Gold Sovereign range is now available, with prices starting at £69. For more information, visit: www.hattonsoflondon.co.u
