New research from the find-a-tradesperson platform Rated People shows how you could increase the value of your home by more than £100k, just by recreating this year’s biggest home improvement trends on TikTok and Instagram.

Herringbone floors, outdoor kitchens and living walls are 2022’s top three most popular home improvement trends – collectively adding £16,431 to the value of a home. Other trends to make the top 20 list include green kitchens, Grandmillennial decor (bold patterns, printed curtains, embellishments like fringe and pleats, and heirloom furniture), kitchen pantries, painted arches and pink bathrooms.

The findings are taken from the 2022 Rated People Home Improvement Trends Report where researchers analysed 800,000 home improvement jobs on Rated People, as well as TikTok, Instagram and Google data, to uncover the 20 biggest home improvement trends in 2022 – they then interviewed more than 2,000 potential property buyers, who revealed how much extra they’d pay for a property if it had each of the trends.

The 20 Biggest Home Improvement Trends in 2022

Natural materials, neutral colour palettes and vintage charm are key trends, with living walls, pampas grass décor, flagstone floors and Cottagecore all featuring in the top 20 biggest trends for 2022. But bold is still popular, with dark kitchens, maximalism, and colour blocking also making the top 20 list.

Herringbone floors have clocked up over 72 million views on TikTok as well as almost 100,000 hashtags on Instagram and 40,000 annual UK Google searches. With an overall popularity score of almost 72,500 million, it’s the most popular home improvement trend in the study and buyers would be happy to pay around £5,500 more for a home if it had a herringbone floor in its interior.

Six in 10 UK homeowners say they’re planning to implement at least one of the top 20 trends this year, and if they did all 20, they could stand to increase the value of their home by £105,046.

Second place outdoor kitchens could add on £5,683, and third place living walls could boost a home’s value by £5,263. When it comes to colour trends, a green kitchen can maximise a property’s value by £5,344, colour blocking can add on £4,776, green walls can increase a property’s sale price by £4,691, and buyers would be prepared to pay an extra £4,498 for a home with a pink bathroom.

Adrienne Minster, CEO at Rated People commented:

“Many of the 20 biggest home improvement and design trends could be achieved for less than £100 and a bit of DIY, which could see you make a nice profit if you’re looking to sell. If you’re keener to tackle a bigger job like building a kitchen pantry or laying a herringbone floor, or if you just want that professional finish on a paint job, we’d recommend using a skilled local tradesperson to help bring your home improvement plans to life.”
