Llanelli MP supports the Summer Reading Challenge

On a visit to Pembrey Library at the end of last week, local Llanelli MP Dame Nia Griffith, encouraged parents and children throughout her constituency to take part in the nationwide Summer Reading Challenge over the next few months as a way of getting young people more interested in reading during the school holidays.

The Challenge will be running in libraries across the country and is the UK’s biggest free reading for pleasure programme for children.  Aimed at 4 to 11 year olds, in particular, over 700,000 children regularly take part by visiting their local library to borrow, read and talk about their favourite books.

Each year, the Challenge has a new and different theme, with 2022 being the year of the “Gadgeteers”, a science and innovation-themed Challenge in partnership with the Science Museum Group.

Llanelli MP, Dame Nia Griffith, said:

“It was great to spend some time at Pembrey Library and see the children enjoying everything that reading can bring.

I really hope that as many people as possible can take their children to a local library in Carmarthenshire this Summer and sign them up to take part in this challenge – it’s free, educational and fun!

Keeping children keen and interested in books and learning over the Summer break is not only a great way of keeping them entertained, it will also help them when they go back to school in September.  It’s a win, win situation and a fabulous way of introducing them to a whole new world of what a local community library can provide them with too.”
