New guidance from CarStore experts on the latest TikTok craze: stealth camping
CarStore has a warning for those considering ‘Stealth camping’ – the latest travel hack taking the internet by storm. The trend sees drivers kitting out their cars with everything they need to spend a night in their vehicle – from foam mattresses to black out shades. Stealth campers are now sharing their personal tips and tricks openly on social platforms including TikTok and Reddit too.
Many believe campers are turning to their cars for the convenience, flexibility and money-saving benefits offered when travelling on a whim, cross-country or even to a planned destination – due to the freedom it offers to sleep wherever you want.
The movement has already garnered a large cult-like following in the USA, that shows no sign of slowing down, with growing numbers also in the UK; #stealthcamping has received over 9.5M views on TikTok alone. Google searches of ‘stealth camping’ have increased by 100%+ in the UK over the past 12 months, with other related key terms like #vanlife on Instagram and TikTok also proving popular, as flexible workers seek a more nomadic lifestyle and look to eschew the rules of the road.
Whilst one of the many benefits of owning a car is the flexibility and freedom provided, it’s important to understand and consider the potential risks and implications involved with staying in your vehicle overnight. CarStore is providing a firm warning to drivers considering giving it a go.
Mark Akbar, Managing Director at CarStore, shares his top considerations:
- Sleeping in a car in the UK while under the influence of drugs or alcohol is illegal and Brits can find themselves with a hefty £2,500 fine, 10 licence points or even a prison term – even if the car is stationary, you could still be considered legally in control. So, if you’re considering camping out in your car after a night at the pub – think again!
- Although it is not an offence to sleep in your car when sober, it is the location which is important. Drivers need to look for a safe place to park, check the location thoroughly and be aware of any parking restrictions – particularly near main roads, national parks, or hospitals and schools.
- If stopping at a motorway service station, be sure to watch how long you are parked up for as after 2 hours, you may be liable for a charge.
- If you’re sure you’re stopping in an appropriate area, you still need to be mindful of the environment and your vehicle by turning the engine off and ensuring you don’t leave the air con or heaters on to avoid battery drain or overheating yourself.
- Never drive when you’re tired, no matter how far away your end destination is. We advise drivers stop every two hours to stretch their legs and get some fresh air, a soft drink and to take a bathroom break, and you should plan for adequate long stop overs when embarking on longer journeys – in a hotel, home, or legal campsite.
Mark adds: “Exploring the UK’s many fantastic campsites and outdoor adventures is a great way to spend the summer, but we’d never advise drivers sleep in their cars overnight. There are many risks involved such as penalties and fines, not to mention the safety risks. Always ensure you have appropriate accommodation booked where you (and your car) can stay safely overnight.”
Before setting out on the road, all drivers should ensure their cars are prepared for the journey. At CarStore, customers can benefit from access to free health checks and affordable repairs.
Mark Akbar adds: “At CarStore, we carry out free Vehicle Health Checks for all our customers, which are comprehensive inspections to monitor the overall condition of a vehicle. We also provide both minor and major repair services, to ensure drivers have absolute peace of mind and confidence that their vehicle is safe before heading off on a trip.”
