On-Screen Ages: Actors Playing Characters Much Younger Than Themselves

With the new series of Stranger Things still being at the height of popularity a month after it ended, it’s no secret that the cast playing the younger characters are now much older in real life. With this in mind, the team at Betway have looked back at the most well-known characters in film and TV played by an actor who’s much older than their character. 

Barbara Streisand – Yentl

In the 1983 drama film Yentl, Barbara Streisand plays the titular character , a Jewish girl disguising herself as a boy to enter religious training. The character is said to be 16, and Barbara Streisand was 41 by the time the film was released. 
Rachel McAdams – Mean Girls

Rachel McAdams played Regina George in the iconic 2004 film Mean Girls. Regina is a high-school student played by a 26-year-old McAdams at the time. 
Jason Earles – Hannah Montana

Miley Cyrus’ Hannah Montana from the iconic Disney show of the same name had a 16-year-old brother in the series called Jackson. Despite Jackson having a baby face, Jason Earles was actually 29 when Hannah Montana started.  
Stacy Dash – Clueless

Stacy Dash played the 17-year-old makeover-loving, matchmaking high school student Dionne in Clueless when she was 29-years-old. As if!  
Jennifer Grey – Dirty Dancing

In the classic 80s film Dirty Dancing, the leading character Baby is aged around 17-year-old. At the time of filming, actress Jennifer Grey was 27 – a decade older.  
Leonardo Dicaprio – Catch Me If You Can

In the 2002 Steven Spielberg movie, Dicaprio’s character is aged around 15 years old at the start of the story. At the time of filming, Dicaprio was 28-years-old. 
 Winona Ryder – Girl, Interrupted

As one of the few Stranger Things actresses that’s the same age as her character in the show, surprisingly Winona Ryder played an 18-year-old when she was 28 in the 1999 movie Girl, Interrupted.  O
Orlando Bloom – Pirates of the Caribbean

Unknown to most, but did you know Will Turner from Pirates of the Caribbean is only 18 in the first film? At the time, actor Orlando Bloom was 26. There’s a reverse one for Orlando Bloom however, as he played his 2,889-year-old Lord of the Rings character Legolas at just 25. 
Emilia Clarke – Game of Thrones

Emilia Clarke was 25-years-old when she began working on hit HBO series Game of Thrones, but her character Danaerys was actually just 15. This is actually aged up from the original book series where she was just 13 at the beginning of the story.   
Shirley Henderson – Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Moaning Myrtle, the ghost of a Hogwarts student that lurks in the Hogwarts bathrooms tormenting Harry isn’t played by anyone near student age. Actress Shirley Henderson was 37 in the second Harry Potter film, probably over 2 decades older than her character.
