REVEALED: The UK regions with the least reported car accidents

  • The Isles of Scilly reported the least number of car accidents compared to the rest of the UK  
  • Scotland, as a country, has the most number of UK areas in the top 10
  • Aberdeen city is the second safest area in the UK for drivers
  • Moray comes in third 

New analysis of the latest ONS data has revealed that the Isles of Scilly is the least prone to car accidents. 

The study, conducted by Insurance experts  A-Plan Insurance, was carried out by assessing the latest ONS data on the number of road accidents reported per 100,000 people for each local authority of the UK. 

According to the latest ONS data, no road accidents were reported in the Isles of Scilly, making it the safest area for drivers in the UK. 

Coming in second is Aberdeen city, which reported 30.55 accidents per 100,000 people. This area of Northeast Scotland is a port city with lots of comings and goings. 

Moray, also in the Northeast of Scotland, ranks as the third safest area for drivers, with only 31.34 car accidents per 100,000 people. 

Orkney Islands, an island chain on the North-eastern coast of Scotland, comes in as the fourth safest area for drivers, with 40.17 accidents reported per 100,000 people. 

In fifth place for the area with the least reported car accidents is Clackmannanshire who, per 100,000 people, experienced 40.94 accidents in the latest ONS data report. 

East Dunbartonshire, which borders Glasgow, reported 42.46 accidents per 100,000 people, making this area of Scotland the sixth safest area for drivers. 

Aberdeenshire ranks as the seventh safest area from injury to drivers with 45.24 accidents reported, according to ONS data. 

Shetland Islands, the northernmost part of the United Kingdom experienced 48.09 accidents per 100,000 people in one year.  

Coming in as the ninth safest area to drive is West Dunbartonshire, which contains many of Glasgow’s commuter towns and villages.  

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar ranks as the tenth safest area to drive with 49.05 road accidents reported in one year; 19 more than Aberdeen city, the second safest.

Commenting on the findings, a spokesperson for  A-Plan Insurance said: “We all want to be safe in our vehicle, and this analysis highlights the areas where road accidents are less likely. There are many factors at play when driving from one destination to the other such as weather conditions, the ability of other drivers and traffic amounts; any one of these could contribute to the risk of an accident. 

The research also shows that many areas of Scotland come in the top ten for having a proportionately lower risk of an accident.”
