This winter, a Wales-wide charity will be offering free online courses to people who have health needs to boost wellbeing and reduce isolation.
Coed Lleol (Small Woods Wales) has been running nature-based health and wellbeing activities since 2010. Some of these activities were brought online for participants during lockdown and led to a range of courses, including Bird ID, herbal medicine, mindfulness, nature crafts and observing flora and fauna, being developed. The nature crafts course will include a free craft pack for every participant. Participants can also opt for accreditation with Agored Cymru, which involves completion of a short workbook, which supports the course content.
Local GP and course tutor Julia Wallond said, “after the pressures and isolation that many people endured during the pandemic, we are seeing that online learning at Coed Lleol is consistently contributing to the overall wellbeing of those that attend”.
A local resident from Flintshire said “Through this course, I have been encouraged to walk more and be mindful in nature. This in turn has helped with my anxiety. I have also learnt about meditations to calm me down at night, which has helped me to sleep”.
The Outdoor Health and Green Infrastructure Project (National) and The Green Infrastructure Partnership project (South Wales – NPT, Swansea & Carmarthenshire) are funded through ENRaW (Enabling Natural Resources and Wellbeing) and HAF (Healthy and Active Fund).
