Dear Editor,
After navigating life through a pandemic, the school experience for teenagers across Wales has been anything but normal for the past two years. With this year’s results being the first set of traditional GSCE results released since 2019, there is reasonable concern from parents surrounding their teens’ futures.
Whether this anxiety is because their teen didn’t receive the results they were hoping for, are unsure about their next steps, or are unmotivated to pursue their goals – the possibility of these young people becoming ‘NEET’ (not in employment, education, or training) could be the reality for some parents.
However, it is not too late for anyone. If you are a parent of a child who perhaps didn’t get the GCSE results you hoped for or has left school with little idea about what’s next, there is a range of support available that can help them explore their options, gain confidence, and learn new skills.
At Itec, we focus on helping young people get on track to achieving their goals at their own pace. As a proud contractor of the Welsh Government’s ambitious new Jobs Growth Wales+ scheme, we can help your teen with everything from making sure they are in the right place mentally and socially to start thinking about work or training, creating a CV, to finding their dream job or getting them the qualifications they need.
Jobs Growth Wales+ is designed to offer life-changing options to young people aged 16-18, not only build their self-confidence but to make sure that they have the skills to pursue their dreams, despite any challenges they may face.
Although sixth form and college are viable options, these avenues may not be the right fit for every young person. Options such as apprenticeships or placements may be overlooked, but these alternatives could help teens discover new opportunities and earn while they learn. At Itec we’ll look at your child and work with them and you to identify what is the best route for each individual, taking it at a pace that is right for them.
Yours Sincerely,
Julie Dyer
