  • Nintendo Switch leads the line, being the most searched console in 24 countries
  • The PlayStation 5 takes second, with 20 countries
  • The Xbox Series X is the favourite in only three countries

New research has revealed the most searched next-gen game console in each European country.

The study by online gaming site Cribbage Challenge analysed Google searches from the past twelve months to see what console each European country is interested in the most.

It found that the Nintendo Switch was the most searched in 24 countries, notably France, Spain, and the Netherlands. The console has sold more than 108 million units since its release in 2017, with more than 28 million units sold in Europe alone. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe remains the most popular title for the console, having sold more than 46 million copies.

The PlayStation 5 was the most searched in 20 countries. Notable areas include Germany, Norway, and Turkey, where Sony’s next-gen console leads in popularity. In June of this year, it was announced that sales for the console had hit 20 million worldwide despite stock shortages since its release in 2020. This is also despite sales in Europe for the console falling by 44% in the first half of 2022.

The study also found that the Xbox Series X was the most popular console in just three countries. These countries were Hungary, Kosovo, and the United Kingdom. Having sold 15 million units since its release in 2020, the Xbox is now beating the PS5 in sales across the past three quarters in the next entry of the ongoing next generation of console wars.

Commenting on the findings, a spokesperson from Cribbage Challenge said: “With stock shortages having a knock-on effect for sales of the next generation, it’s clear from this data where those effects are at most. Despite selling less than Microsoft’s counterpart, the PS5 remains the most searched, showing there is still demand for it despite the lack of stock across Europe. It’ll be interesting to see how sales truly fare when stock is at a consistent amount.”
