  • The majority of the countries in the top 10 are western or northern European, but Moldova and Romania are the exceptions

Sweden is found to be the European country most interested in eco-friendly solutions, a new study has revealed.

The study, conducted by drinking straw experts Drinking-Straw.com, analysed the Google Trends results of keywords such as “environmentally friendly” and “recycling” translated in each European language and compared among each other for an accurate interpretation of Google Trend’s search volumes. In doing so, it has been possible to discover which European country has the highest search volume for eco-friendly terms in the past twelve months.

Sweden came out on top, having the highest average of searches for the keywords overall, with a final average of 72.27. The northern European country has taken eco solutions extremely seriously already in the past and the Swedish government has set ambitious goals for sustainability, including going fossil-free by 2045 and switching entirely to renewable energy. Sweden is also transparent about its emissions of air pollution, as Statistic Sweden published yearly recaps.

Second on the list is Denmark, with a final average of 58.97, which is already considerably lower than Sweden’s. Nevertheless, Denmark is also set on a greener future, with its government pushing the population to focus on more eco-friendly solutions to their everyday life. In fact, the three major pillars of Denmark’s environmental missions are “bikes, wind, and trash”. This underlines the commitment towards greener transportation methods, the use of renewable energy and recycling.

The United Kingdom comes in third, its final average between the two keywords’ results being 54.85. The UK is statistically among the best performing countries in Europe according to the Eco-Innovation Index, and its citizens seems as engaged and interested in doing their part for the environment, as the searches, mostly for “recycling” suggest.

Further down on the list, Finland is fourth, totalling 48.93, while Ireland closes the top five, with a total score of 35.86.

A spokesperson for Drinking-Straw.com commented on the findings: “The data collected can be considered encouraging, as it demonstrates that not only European countries intend to engage in building a greener future at the government level, but also testifies to how the population is actually interested in change.

“This ranges from information on more eco-sustainable solutions to daily habits such as recycling, to the exchange of products that can harm the environment for ecological products such as pasta, reed or reusable straw”.

The research was conducted by Drinking-Straw.com, first specialist in drinking straws in France and Europe that offers a very wide range of reusable, disposable, edible, biodegradable or ecological drinking straws for events, bars, restaurants or goodies.
