8 tips to help you get over a breakup

Reassured spoke to Dr Tony Ortega, a clinical psychologist and author and Barbara Santini, Psychologist and relationship advisor to provide top tips on how best to get over a breakup:

Focus on the recovery

Even though setting yourself a timeline can feel like a source of hope and guidance, it can in fact disrupt your healing process. So instead of thinking about how you may feel better in three months’ time, actively focus on the recovery process.

Don’t ignore feelings

We often experience feelings of betrayal, sadness, embarrassment, rejection, fear, or relief after a breakup. To get over a breakup faster, you may want to welcome what you are feeling. From there, develop strategies (journaling or meditation) for connecting with the feeling. Some strategies may work better for one than others, so trying a couple of different ones can be a good idea.

Be Kind to Yourself

Another good way of getting over a breakup is being kind to yourself.

This involves focusing on your hobbies or things that make you happy, spending time alone to combat negative feelings, or supporting others (financially, emotionally, or spiritually). Make a point to do things for you and only you.

Don’t overdo it

It can be tempting to always keep busy, but breakups are exhausting, so ensure to not forget about those much-needed rest days.

Forgive Your Ex and Yourself

It can be challenging to get over a breakup if you don’t forgive your ex and yourself. In forgiving your ex and yourself, you are avoiding frustration and resentment that can disrupt your healing process. Taking a step forward and starting the process to forgive can be a huge help towards healing.

Find a New Direction in Life

If you were staying with your boyfriend, you might want to move out or relocate. Finding a new direction in life can also mean changing your circle of friends. It can be difficult to make a decision in this time, so it is important for you to take your time, but at the same time push yourself to take new steps.

A clean break

Relationships consume so much of our identity that a clean break, even if just temporary, is important to allow yourself to reset.

Gossip

Try to avoid any gossip about your ex, that includes telling mutual friends to not update you on what your ex has been up to. This will help you to disassociate from your ex-partner and subsequently helps you to move forward.

A spokesperson from Reassured comments on the research as follows: “Songs often help us through difficult times in our lives. An upbeat song may get the dopamine flowing and you feel a rush of happiness, whereas slow, sad songs may leave us feeling understood as the singer lets us believe they have gone through something similar. We hope that these songs can help you to deal with a breakup”
