Struggling families can save themselves hundreds of pounds a year on their water bills through three simple bathroom habit hacks – according to new research by The Bathroom Showroom

Hack 1: Reduce shower time (this can save each person around £110 per year)

Research into water bill price rises reveals that the cost of running a shower for the average length of 8 minutes has risen by 16p a day in 2022 compared to 2021, with consumers now paying 60p per daily wash.

As an annual cost, each person who takes a daily shower will pay around £55 more than in 2021, which is a new total yearly cost of roughly £220.

A person who changes from showering for 8 minutes daily to 4 minutes daily could however save roughly £110 on their water bill over the course of the year.

For a family of four this hack could lead to a saving of £430 over the course of a year.

Hack 2: Turn off tap when brushing your teeth (this saves each person around £205 per year)

Many people leave the tap running whilst brushing their teeth, yet many may also be unaware that a running tap typically uses 10 litres of water per minute. Over a year, households could be letting literally thousands of litres of water per year go to waste while brushing their teeth.

As well as being bad for the environment, this is a habit that will see your money flowing down the drain. Leaving a tap on for one-minute costs just over 9p, which adds up quickly.

Assuming you leave the tap on for three minutes while you brush your teeth in the morning and for three minutes again in the evening, and do this every day for the full year, the cost of this wasted water would be around £205 per person, per year.

For a family of four who brush their teeth individually, this could work out at over £800 a year.

Instead, only turn on the tap for very short periods of time when you actually need the water.

Hack 3: Quit your regular soak in the tub (this saves each person around £1,015 per year if you have a large bath every day)

Another simple hack to save money is to ditch regular soaks in the tub in favour of short showers, as these use a lot less water than baths.

Brits who run a large bath every day will now rack up an annual bill of around £1,015 in 2022 – enough to pay for twenty weekly shops at a cost of £50.

It’s safe to say that having a soak in the bathtub is becoming a very expensive habit.

Parv Sangera, Managing Director at The Bathroom Showroom, said: “Millions of people up and down the country are looking for ways to cut down on their household bills, and this data shows that water bills are rising just as rapidly as other utilities.

“We know that this is a tough time for many, and all we can advise is to try and save water wherever possible, even small savings can make a big difference, and saving water also helps the environment to boot.”
