Back in 2018, a six-year old child was picked from school by a person that was not a parent, guardian or other approved family member. Instead, it was an elderly man who was supposed to pick up a completely different person.

This story sparked outrage and justified concern over the process of school pickups. Why did this occur? How can it be circumvented in the future?

Iterate.ai has developed License Plate Recognition technology to add additional security and to prevent cases like this from happening. Student pickup zones are a bottleneck for picking up students every day, and safety concerns have elevated the need for a better experience on school campuses.

Iterate’s License Plate Recognition can enhance school campus safety by accomplishing the following:

  • Authorized parent cars are registered ahead of time, with alerts sent to staff if any unrecognized car approaches the building or is on campus grounds
  • Text notifications are automatically sent to staff and student when a parent’s car approaches pickup zone
  • Reduced crowding in the zone increases safety from accidents and incidents
  • Pickup times are improved

“One of the many ways License Plate Recognition technology can be utilized is with school pickup and safety monitoring of school grounds. Authorized personnel can see who is on school property in real-time. This can range from minor, convenience benefits like seeing when a teacher’s lunch order has arrived to preventing students from being picked up from unauthorized vehicles. In the event that a child is picked up from an unauthorized vehicle, the AI system has the license plate and car vehicle on record for law enforcement,” explains Iterate.ai Co-Founder and CTO Brian Sathianathan.

As the new school year picks up, it is important for parents and teachers to be aware that this technology exists and what it can do to better protect schools.

Iterate.ai, founded in 2013 by Brian Sathianathan and Jon Nordmark, wants to help protect students and is making their technology affordable to any school that wants it. Would you be interested in learning more about this technology or speaking with a member of Iterate’s team? I would be happy to coordinate an interview with you.

Here is a recent TV segment discussing Iterate’s technology.
