The transition into autumn means that there may be different priorities for your garden in the cooler weather to maintain its quality, the same goes for your garden shed. Investing in your shed also means taking up some maintenance throughout the seasons to make it last years.
To help look after your shed, Jack Sutcliffe, Co-Founder of Power Sheds, four top shed care tips for keeping it in top condition for autumn:
1. Get it looking ship shape
If your shed is looking a bit worse for wear, be sure to clean both the interior and exterior fully to prepare for the colder weather. Trim the grass and any vegetation around your shed to keep it tidy, and rid the roof of any debris, such as leaves and twigs, as these can house pests and insects that might cause moisture and rot.
2. Check your roof
Once you’ve tidied up, use a ladder to properly inspect the roof of your shed. This is vital to do seasonally in order to prevent moss or algae build up that may occur if your shed doesn’t have direct sunlight. Gently remove this from the roof and use warm, soapy water to rinse down the roof and sides of the shed with a soft brush.
3. Maintain and check fixtures
It’s important to check your locks, windows and doors to ensure that they are secure and in good condition. If there are any signs of repair, such as caulking around the windows and rust, make sure these are fixed before winter comes. It is important to keep your shed water-tight to make it less susceptible to moisture damage.Ā Ā
4. Treat your wood
The cold and wet weather can have a serious effect on wooden structures if they aren’t well maintained, so if your shed hasn’t had a fresh lick of paint in a couple of years, now is the time to do it. Firstly, find out if your shed has had an oil or water preserve used on it. If you are unsure, you may need to sand the wood back and start from scratch, as it is not advised to combine oil and water preserves together. Once you have treated your shed, it is much more likely to withstand the cold and icy weather in winter.
